Knotting and Ropework Glossary

Compiled 2008 by Frank C Brown

Introduction

This collection of terms has been derived from a number of authoritative texts (see Reference Section). The terms are related to equipment and materials that may be encountered in the handling of various types of flexible materials, ranging from the thinnest threads to the thickest rope, when engaged in craft knotting and general rope work. The names of knots are not included or any terms relating to needlework, lace making, weaving and similar crafts save where such terms have relevance to general knotting and rope work.

The reference for each term is indicated in the brackets.
