Back a Strand  (a) In the Long Splice, to fill the score vacated by one strand, with one of the opposite strands. (b) In the Back Handed Splice, to tuck one strand in a helix around the opposing one. (3)

Backhanded rope The yarns and strands have a right handed twist and the rope itself a left twist. (3)

Backing  Small flanking wormings at either side  of the main worming , in large hawser sand cables. (3)

Becket  (a) The rope handle on a sea chest. (b) A short rope with and eye at one end and a button at the other. (3)

Belay (a rope)  (a) To secure or make fast, (b) To catch or arrest a fall. (7)

Belly (of a knot) The part of a knot which joins two ends of tucks before being pulled up. (4)

Bend (n)  A generic name for knot used to join two separate ropes together.

Bend (v). To tie two ropes together.

Bight  Any slack part of the rope between the ends, particularly when curved or looped. (3)

Bight, (tied) in the  The process of tying a knot in the Standing Part of any cordage without using either the Working End or the Standing End. (5)

Any knot tied in the Bight, i.e. without utilising the Ends

Binding The tying with line around two or more objects to hold them tightly together. (4)

Bind (v) To Jam or to Seize or Lash

Binding Knot Any knot used to contain or bind objects together. (8)

Bitter End, Tag end, Bare End. The inactive inboard End of a cable abaft (in the direction of the stern) the bitts (Samson Post). (3)

Block A machine with grooved wheel(s) for diverting the Lead of a rope, or when compounded, for increasing the power of a Tackle. (3)

Body The bulky, tied part of a knot

Bolt  A Heaver (3)

Bond A knot that Binds (3)

Bowse Down To draw a line down tight (10) ( usually with tackle).

Braid (n) Plaited rope (10) Rope made from three or more strands interwoven in a diagonal pattern. (1)

Braid (v) To make Braid

Breaking Strength The force required to rupture a knot or cord. (7)

Bungee A line of elastic rubber yarns, bound and held by a man-made fibre stretching cover --- also known as shock cord. (4)
